Your refrigerator's water and ice dispenser is more than a quick way to get a cool drink of water. When the right water filter is in place, your fridge will also be a source of clean, pure water that will keep you and your family healthy and hydrated. Find out why it's important to replace the filter on time, what the filter does, how to replace it and more.

More than just making your water look and taste good, fridge filters can remove a variety of contaminants that can cause illness. Some can filter out as many as 66 different contaminants including pharmaceuticals, waterborne parasites, lead and mercury, pesticides, asbestos and industrial chemicals. Drinking water filtered by your refrigerator will help you and your loved ones stay healthy and hydrated.

All refrigerators that come with a water dispenser include a filtration system that removes impurities so that you have clean, great tasting water. Old refrigerator filters can develop a build up of the captured contaminants, which can cause your water quality to drop and result in an unpleasant smell or taste. Over time, filters can also become a breeding ground for bacteria that can actually contaminate your drinking water instead of cleaning it. Replacing your fridge filter ensures clean, safe drinking water.

Filters are usually labeled with their name and part number, but you can also use our Fridge Filter Finder tool to order the right filter for your fridge. Also, your refrigerator model number should be printed on a label that's place in your fridge. It should be inside on an upper wall, on the fridge's face frame, behind a crisper drawer or behind the lower kick plate.

Possibly. It depends on the brand and model of your fridge. The majority of refrigerators do not need the water to be turned off, but a few brands, like Samsung do. The installation instructions will tell you if it's need.

If your refrigerator has an indicator that tells you when to change the filter, it needs to be reset when you replace the filter. Each manufacturer has different instructions for resetting the indicator.

To avoid this problem, we recommend that you replace your KitchenAid refrigerator water filter every six months. We also suggest that you avoid generic water filters as these can cause even bigger problems. This will ensure that your refrigerator gets fresh, clean water while preventing problems like a broken ice maker.

Our first major research project was a survey of Wirecutter readers, with more than 5,000 completed responses, led by Wirecutter user research lead Raquel Hamias, who conducted the survey for us and crunched the results into usable numbers. This survey gave us solid data on overall satisfaction by brand and door style, an idea of the refrigerator features that make the most people the happiest, and some info about refrigerator reliability.

We also read a slew of other refrigerator reviews, info about reliability, and guides on how to pick and install fridges. For previous versions of this guide, we also spoke to several industry experts, including brand representatives, dealers, and repair technicians.

Among refrigerators from the five major brands, LG fridges seem to make their owners the happiest. In a Wirecutter reader survey, far more real-life LG owners said they were satisfied with their fridges than owners of other brands did, and fewer said they hated their fridges.

The big caveat with LG refrigerators is that some of its larger fridges are more likely than those of other brands to stop cooling, especially older models. It has been a big problem over the past decade, and although the company seems to have corrected the issue with most of its current models, there are still some side-by-side models with a really poor track record.

We did find that LG fridges were slightly less likely to break in minor ways that are annoying (though often tolerable). So with an LG refrigerator, you might be less likely to deal with nuisances like broken shelves, handles, doors, lights, ice makers, or water dispensers. Owners also cited temperature inconsistencies less often and were notably less likely to say that organizing the fridge and keeping track of items was difficult. Consumer Reports puts LG near the front of the pack for reliability, too.

R600a is a huge improvement over R134a, which is 1,430 times as strong a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide and was the most common refrigerant for household refrigerators through 2019 (some popular models still use it). R134a is a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant, or HFC. (HFCs contain the chemical elements hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon.) The EPA told us that while they have not restricted the use of R134a yet, they are currently considering measures to limit all HFC refrigerants in refrigerators, as well as in air conditioners, aerosols, and foams.

Judging by this list, the most efficient style of fridge (in terms of energy use per cubic foot of storage) tends to be a large top-freezer model, which should have plenty of storage for a couple but might feel cramped for a household of four. But the list has plenty of other efficient models in other styles, as well. According to the EPA, a general rule of thumb is that the larger the refrigerator, the more energy it uses; the most energy-efficient models have a capacity of 16 to 20 cubic feet.

Remember back when refrigerators had fake wood grain finishes like an old Ford Country Squire station wagon? Well, thankfully, that's not what KitchenAid tried on its latest fridge. Instead, the design-forward KitchenAid KRFC704FPS and KRFC704FBS (available at Best Buy for $4,499.99) offer a more modern twist on natural materials.

All the drawers for the refrigerator compartments have a soft-close feature, like high-end cabinets. These full-extension, self-close drawers are great at maximizing space, like the rest of the appliance. Unfortunately, the rollers they slide on feel far too rickety for a $3,800 refrigerator.

Let's face it: It's not often that a refrigerator stands out because of its design. But that's exactly what the KitchenAid KRFC704FBS does. With an optional black stainless exterior, a unique interior finish, easy-to-organize shelves, and wood trim, this upscale KitchenAid is unlike anything else out there.

Counter-depth refrigerators have an inherent disadvantage when it comes to storage space, but this refrigerator is filled with clever engineering touches that help it make the most out of the space that it is.

We purchased a top of the line KitchenAid refrigerator that has had issues with the ice maker from the start. The recent issue was the ice maker was not making ice and when it did, all the ice was melting and fereezing in a laerge clump. We opened a service ticket back in Ocxtober of 2019, then again in May 2020 that stayed open until November of 2020, 6 MONTHS! During these multiple service calls, many other issues were discovered with the refrigerator including the compressor, the freezer dorr swwithc and other cooling system issues that all contributed to the ice maker not working. The Tech was great and kept ordering parts that came in the wrong colors. Finally he re-built a large part in the freezer that was suposed to fix the ice maker issue. Here we are, 4 months later and it stil is not working. I finally called again to schedule another appointment but I really feel like this is a lemon with larger issues than the ice maker. I have requested a call from a manager as well as scheduled ANOTHER Tech to come out to look at the unit but I am so tired of working so hard for a working refrigerator. Can I please get some assistance on how to turn this into the lemon warranty or cash-out the geek sqwuad service plan we paid for? The geek squad call center said of course we cover the ice maker and will keep coming back to fix it. I dont want something that has to be fixed over and over again, I want something that works! Please help! 041b061a72
